Ronaldo came out on top in the vote, with the voting process split evenly between four equally-weighted categories: national team managers, national team captains, selected members of the press and fans.
The original list of 24 nominees was whittled down to just three, leaving Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar vying for first place. As it is so often the case, it was Ronaldo who came out on top following a trophy-laden campaign that saw him help Real Madrid to the La Liga, Champions League and Club World Cup titles.
The award means that Ronaldo has now been named 'The Best' by FIFA two years running after also taking home the inaugural edition of the prize last year. That means that the Real Madrid star is the only player to have own the prize since it was separated from the Ballon d'Or.
Ronaldo's impressive performances last season saw him contribute 42 goals and 12 assists to the Real Madrid cause, but it was in the Champions League where the 32-year-old really showed his worth, scoring 10 goals in five games between the quarter-final and the final, including two against Juventus in Cardiff to propel his side to victory and their 12th European Cup.
Yet another individual award for the Portuguese to add to his sizeable trophy cabinet. Despite his advancing years, Ronaldo isn't ready to give up his place at the summit of world football quite yet.
