Luka Modric named Best Midfielder in last year's Champions League

The Croatian midfielder picked up the award ahead of his team-mates Casemiro and Toni Kroos on Thursday in Monaco during the draw for the Champions League group stage.
The three Real Madrid players who made up the shortlist all played a key role in midfield as their team swept everyone else aside to win their 'Duodécima', the 12th time they have been crowned the best team in Europe, five more than any other side.
However, it was Luka Modric who shone in the Madrid midfield and prevailed ahead of his colleagues, as UEFA named him the Best Midfielder in the competition.
The 31-year-old featured in 11 out of 13 of his side's matches in the tournament and played a pivotal role in midfield as Los Blancos became the first team to retain the Champions League trophy.
