U.S Must Prove Allegation Of s*xual Misconduct Against Nigerian Lawmakers – Dogara
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara has challenged the United States Government to provide evidence of alleged s*xual misconduct leveled against three members of the House. The U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle in a June 9, 2016 petition to the leadership of the House, alleged that Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC-Bauchi State) “grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for s*x”; while Mark Terseer Gbillah (APC-Benue) and Samuel Ikon (PDP-Akwa Ibom) “requested hotel parking attendants assist them to solicit prostitutes”.
The trio were attending an International Visitor Leadership Programme in Cleveland, Ohio when they allegedly committed the said s*xual offences.
While the accused lawmakers denied the allegations and threatened to explore every available legal channel to clear their names, the House has commenced a probe of the grave allegations.
But the Speaker, responding to questions on the issue on Twitter yesterday, said: “He who alleges must prove. That’s the law”.
In subsequent tweets he said: “As we speak no evidence has been put forward other than the letter sent to my office and copied to many others.
“Together with the US Embassy in Nigeria we will get to the bottom of this matter and until then let’s not be judgmental.
“Under our laws an accused person is deemed innocent until proven guilty and he enjoys the benefit of any doubt”.
Mr. Dogara further said he was “awfully embarrassed” because “Social media trial and conviction of members alleged to have committed the offence is taking up arms against our laws”.
According to him, the concerned lawmakers have expressed their readiness to face trial in the US if necessary “at their own cost”.
