Osun NLC pickets IBEDC Osogbo Office

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Osun state chapter, on Monday  shut Osogbo business hub of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution company ( IBEDC) to register their protest against the 45% increment in the electricity tarrif.

As a result of the several customers, who were at the IBEDC's office to  purchase electricity or register complaints early in the morning were prevented from being attended to by the protesting workers.

The NLC members were also joined in the protest by students, market women and artisans as majority of them carried placards with various inscriptions like; "Nigerians cannot be paying more for epileptic power supply", "No to unlawful and wilful hike in electricity tarrif", "Osun state NLC says no to 45% increase in electricity tarrif",and "DISCOS, don't increase the burden of Nigerians" among others.

IBEDC workers were subsequently chased out of their office by the demonstrators.

While addressing journalists, Osun State chairman of the NLC, Comrade Jacob Adekomi lamented that was unfortunate that the DISCOS declined  to honour the agreement signed in 2013 on the provision of electricity metres for all customers.

Describing the 45% tarrif increment as inhuman and callous, in the face of  epileptic electricity supply to Nigerians, he tasked  DISCOS to respect the position of Nigerians by ensuring that the statusquo remain on the electricity tariff.

In his remark, the state chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akinyemi Olatunji, said DISCOS lacked the  power to increase electricity tarrif, stressing that there was a litigation over the a matter in the court of law.
