Parents' fears for 'werewolf' daughter, five, after the only laser capable of curing her medical condition in Brazil breaks, leaving her completely covered in hair
- Kemilly Vitoria Pereira de Souza was diagnosed with hypertrichosis
- The rare condition means the patient's body is heavily covered in hair
- The five-year-girl also has larger lips and nose due to her condition
- Kemilly's mother said that some people had said horrible comments about her daughter and compared her to an animal
A
five-year-old girl suffering from a condition commonly referred to as
werewolf syndrome has stopped receiving treatment after the hair removal
device at the local hospital broke.
Kemilly
Vitoria Pereira de Souza was diagnosed with hypertrichosis, a rare
condition which means her body is almost totally covered in hair and her
lips and nose are also larger than usual.
In
December 2013 the family had to move 800 miles from their hometown to
Goiania for little Kemilly to receive proper treatment but hospital
staff have struggled to find a solution.

The
hospital based in the southern Brazilian city of Goiania have been
unable to stem the hair growth following their inability to repair or
replace the broken hair removal device.
Despite
Kemily's condition, her mother said she does not face any problems at
school but recognises she might face prejudice in later life.
'There
are no issues at school as everyone knows the problem and teachers
explained to the children that she has a health problem, but we still
face prejudice in other places,' Kemilly's mother, Patricia Batista
Pereira, said
'The
other day we were at a theatre show and we heard a person saying that my
daughter looks like an animal. As a mother, this hurts so much,' she
recalled.
For
the last five months poor Kemilly's condition has spiraled out of
control, with the hair clearly visible on the young girl's face and
arms.
Without
treatment for the past five months, her parents and doctors now fear
that all the progress made in the last two years could be lost.
Her
father Antonio de Souza, 37, said: 'We are afraid that all the progress
achieved through the treatment will now be lost. The child herself sees
the hair is growing back and she's asking us when we are taking her to
the hospital to have it removed.'

Hospital
representatives claim the medical device used for the therapy is broken
and they need a piece of equipment only made in Israel to fix it.
The hospital has managed to agree a contract to rent a laser device, but this is not compatible with the needs of children.
'It
is a serious situation that needs be solved quickly as the patients
need the medical sessions continuously,' the hospital said.

Despite her noticeable condition,
Kemilly has not faced any bullying issues at school as pupils are aware
and respectful of her medical condition, her mother said.
